The Care of Palm Trees

Check out the following tips for how to care for a palm tree! Many palm trees die due to the owners not knowing how to look after them properly. Here are some tips!

Sunlight Requirements

Your palm trees need to be planted in the right location in your yard. You may kill your palm if you grow it in the wrong place because palms have varying light preferences.

Often, palms are picky about the light they receive. You should know which light your palm prefers. Generally, palm trees like the sun will lose their leaves as they grow toward the sun if planted in the shade. Similarly, if you plant a palm that hates direct sunlight and it can only tolerate shade, its leaves will start to burn and brown.

Requirements For Temperature

The most popular palm tree varieties grow in tropical climates with mild winters and warm summers. In most palm species, optimal temperatures range from 95°F during the day to 78°F at night. Some palms are tolerant of temperatures exceeding 110°F.

Even in colder climates, there are a few kinds of palms that can grow successfully. Some species are tolerant to light snowfall. Moreover, if you want to grow your palm trees fastly then check the complete guide How Fast Do Palm Trees Grow?

Planting Palms

Planting is the first step. The tree may not survive if you plant it the wrong way, dig it too deeply, or raise it too high. It would be best if you acclimatized your palm tree to its new habitat before planting it to minimize ‘transplant shock. Keep the roots as long as possible, and don’t trim them.

A tree that has just been planted should not receive nutrients until it develops new roots, which can take between 1-2 months. You will only add stress to your newly planted palm if you add fertilizer soon after planting. For complete information, you can check Planting Plam Trees Guide.

Waterinng Palms

Palm trees like moist, draining soil, which is typically not found in the desert. For this reason, it is vital to use good soil that assimilates water well yet at the same time allows fast drainage.

Water that doesn’t drain from poor soil will cause the roots to decay, causing eventual tree death.

Testing the dirt with a soil tester is an excellent way to ensure your tree receives enough water. Planting palms recently has short roots that require frequent watering. After the palms establish themselves, the watering schedule can be changed to regular. During the hot summer months, water palms are more frequent than in winter. Please find out how to take care of them by looking at our guide.

Providing Fertilizer

Using fertilizer

The importance of fertilizers cannot be overstated, particularly since you usually get what you pay for. Purchase a reliable brand. When new roots and foliage are developing in the developing season, you should make sure your palm gets all the nutrients it needs. In addition to being healthier, trees are more likely to survive cold snaps in winter as well.

Remember that too much fertilizer can debilitate the palm by consuming its underlying foundations. Pests and diseases regularly infest such plants. Slow-release fertilizers are those that keep working half the year and don’t dissolve in 2-3 downpours. Until your palm trees are adapted to fertilizer, don’t introduce them to newly planted palms.

Palm Pruning

Palm trees require pruning and regular care to remain healthy. Take out any old fruit stems and dead leaves (fronds). Once the palm fronds turn brown and begin to fall, you can prune them for that you should know how to trim palm trees.

  • For trimming palm trees, it is vital to ensure that the fronds do not turn visible green. Palm trees with large leaves require you to use a pruning saw to cut them. You can prune Palm trees of smaller sizes with a pair of sharp pruning shears.
  • To avoid splintering of the blades of the pruning tool, apply hydrogen peroxide between cutting sessions when pruning palms. Using hydrogen peroxide between cutting sessions reduces the risk of spreading diseases between palms.
  • To ensure your fronds are kept as close to the trunk of your tree as possible, prune them as close as you can. In time, the leaf base will fall off as the tree grows, but sometimes this takes many years for the process to occur. In the case that it is torn off the trunk, there may be scarring.
  • Prune your palm tree if you want, but it encourages new growth. You should leave the fronds on tall palms if you cannot reach the top to prune them without using a crane. After a while, the fronds will fall off naturally.

Dead fronds on your palms, however, are unsightly. A tree felling service can prune the tree to remove the dead leaves if you are bothered by the sight of the dead leaves.

Cold Protection

Frequently, I receive inquiries about frozen/cold harmed palms. Unless you possess a very hardy palm tree, please don’t do that. In tropical locations, the weather is less predictable, leading to people being surprised by sudden cold fronts. The risk is that your palm tree will wake up frosted up and sad, and you will have no stress!

When your palms are cold, you can protect them most effectively by spraying them with a product from your local store that’s specially formed to protect them. Frost blankets are also helpful. Some other tips:

  • To protect the roots, spread mulch around them. Leave a 6-inch mulch layer around the bases.
  • Cover the palm tree trunk with a burlap.
  • You might consider using a container, or bin, to protect a small palm.
  • Heat the room with a space heater.
  • Add warmth to the tree by wrapping CFL lights around it or using x-mas lights.

How to Care for your Palms

You can feed your trees four times a year for dramatic growth if you fertilize your palms. It would help if you began providing your palm tree four weeks after establishing its root system.

Apply a fertilizer that contains 1 part phosphorous, 1 part magnesium, two parts nitrogen, and three parts potassium. Ideally, you should water your tree three to four times a week, and if it gets hot, you should water it five to six times a week. You will obtain the best results if you form a dam around the planting area and water the soil directly around the root ball.

In the weeks following transplantation, ensure your open-grown tree receives plenty of water to prevent transplant shock. It may only be necessary to water desert palm trees every ten days once they have established roots.

The End

In warmer tropical regions of the US, palm trees do better than their hardy counterparts because they thrive in various climates. Although you may not grow palm trees in the middle of the country, it is possible to raise them in the north.

When the weather starts to drop below 45F at the beginning of the season, you’ll have to overwinter your palm trees. You can overwinter palm trees in a few easy steps. Ensure that the tree is protected from the wind by putting up a perimeter wall. Windbreaks protect trees from the danger of wind chill.
